Your Instructor

Jamie New Johnson
Jamie New Johnson

Howdy! I’m your teacher, Jamie New Johnson.

I’m a Toronto-based author, content marketer, artist manager, former coach and college teacher, and current online music business teacher.

I've been in the artist management world since 2011 and started my blog-turned-business SmartBandManagement.com in 2013 to share what I was learning about artist management as I learned it, both from my personal experiences as a manager and from the interviews and workshops I was hosting with expert managers from around the world.

My start in the artist management world began when I landed my dream job managing an organization called the Music Managers Forum Canada. There are about 25 Music Managers Forums’ around the world who all work together under the International Music Managers Forum (which is based out of Luxembourg in Europe).

I was responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of MMF Canada. My main role was to plan workshops for artists and managers to learn from more experienced artist managers from all around the world.

It didn't take long before I realized I wanted to be a manager too. So I got my ass out to some shows, saw a band I loved, chatted with them after the show, and next thing you know we signed a short-term 6-month management agreement.

Since then, I’ve continued in artist management both as an independent manager , and with artist management companies of GRAMMY and JUNO Award Winning artists.

I've worked with artists who write and perform rock, alternative rock, indie pop, pop, R&B, country, electronic, and hip hop music.

The artists I’ve worked with as an independent manager have toured nationally and internationally, they’ve had major television and film placements, opened for world-renowned artists, nominated for JUNO and CCMA awards, had successful crowdfunding campaigns, YouTube and digital streaming success, chart-topping radio hits, and Platinum singles.

I've also had the incredible opportunity to work under and learn from some amazing managers who have managed GRAMMY and JUNO Award winning artists for 30+ years.

The thing is... when I first started, I wasn't learning fast enough. I was planning workshops with managers from around the world, but the issue was that everything was always in-person.

When I Googled something, there wasn't really much available on the topic; plus I didn't want to harass my colleagues with questions every day.

I always wished that there was more online information that would give me step-by-step details.

So instead of waiting for it to happen, I decided to start Smart Band Management and help people out who were having the same challenges I was.

And that's why I'm here. Because no matter where you're at right now, I believe none of us should have to do it alone.

"Smart Band Management offers a great resource to artists and managers of all levels and allows aspiring professionals a new perspective on todays evolving music industry."

- Tim Des Islets, Manager of JUNO Award Winning Artists

"An excellent resource for artists or managers at any point in their career. The information and stories available on this site are rare to find elsewhere. It’s a one-stop shop for everything needed to successfully manage and build an artist’s career."

- Dearbhla Trainor, Artist Manager, Former Feldman Agency Booking Associate
